Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0 Review
What is Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant (DGPS)
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant (DGPS) is a synthetic sealant, created using chemical polymers to create a deep-gloss, wet-looking finish on your paint.
The product, according to Wolfgang, is created with fortified polymer technology, with anti-static properties to repel water, dust and road grime among other things to protect your paint and make it easy to maintain.
As above, Wolfgang is a sealant, Wolfgang calls it a synthetic wax, which protects your paint.
As detailing enthusiasts know, there are 3 steps to the detailing process, the wash stage, the correction or polishing stage, and the protection stage.
Wolfgang DGPS is the last, or protection stage. It doesn’t provide any correction ability but provides great protection, and amazing gloss.
Wolfgang DGPS is a butter-like colour, and does have a very strong petroleum-based smell, so I don’t recommend taking a big smell of it, there is also a warning label advising against inhaling the product.
As with all chemical-based products, I strongly recommend shaking this before use, as you can see separation happen when it has been sitting on your shelf for more than a day or two.
How to Apply Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant
While the perfect application process would involve washing and decontaminating the car, polishing the paint to perfection and then applying a coat of Deep Gloss Paint Sealant to complete the job, it’s not strictly necessary.
I ensured my car was clean, and then did some prep. I wiped the bonnet down with some CarPro Eraser, an IPA wipedown product meant to cleanse the surface of any oils that may be left over.
After wiping I then ensured it was dry, I had also taped over the windscreen washer jets, to ensure the product didn’t accidentally stain them white. (After using the product again to take the photos for the review, I can confirm that Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant doesn’t stain plastics white, although I would strongly recommend being cautious)
I applied a small amount to a Meguairs wax applicator pad, the popular yellow ones, and then applied a thin layer over the entire bonnet, putting more product onto the applicator when needed.
I then allowed the product to dry for about 15-20 minutes, allowing it to haze over, and using the popular “swipe test”, to ensure it was dry.
Once dry, I have cleaned the applicator in this time, I used a microfibre towel to remove the product.
I can confirm that it removed VERY smoothly, and was a great experience. The feel of the paint after was also unbelievably smooth. I left it to fully cure overnight, as the instructions say.
They specify a minimum of 12 hours away from water, as water stops the product fully curing with air.
How Long Does Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant & Tips for Maintaining
Most paint sealants will last 6-12 months, depending on conditions, weather, maintenance process.
Wolfgang claims 6 months depending on the weather ,but again this may be a conservative estimate and strongly depends on how you maintain it.
My regular maintenance process is a standard wash for us enthusiasts, 2 buckets, a good soap, quite like Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo, but you could use whatever works for you, a good foam to break down the dirt after the initial rinse and then rinsing the soap off.
When drying I like to use a drying aid, I use some Meguiars Quik Detailer and CarPro DHydrate drying towel.
I’ve then found that a good spray wax really enhances the protection, in my case I use a polymer-based spray wax from Auto Finesse, called Glisten. It smells fantastic and really helps to boost the gloss and protection of the harder wearing sealant underneath.
I’ve even had a situation where I’ve driven in the rain and when arriving at my destination, the car is dry on the doors and roof as water is unable to stick.
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant Appearance
Well, where do I begin?
The look of the product was impressive, the Spirit Blue used by Ford on the ST models is a beautiful colour, a deep rich blue, with a metallic shine to it, it has incredible depth, that has only been improved by Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant, it added depth and incredible glossiness.
The feel too was amazing, the bonnet was incredibly smooth and silky, in fact, I couldn’t help but pop into my garage every so often to feel it (yes, I know you’re not supposed to touch the paint).
But it was so smooth, and any dust that got onto it could be removed with a simple blow.
Once fully cured, I did a water repellency test by placing a small amount of water onto the surface to see what happened. The water immediately ran off, leaving only a small bead or 2 which could easily be absorbed by a microfibre cloth. Count me very impressed.
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant Review Summary
Now when reviewing a product like this, it’s important to take into all facets of the product and that’s where we hit Wolfgang DGPS’s 1 flaw, the price.
Now, this may differ from where you live and the price point, but here in South Africa it set me back an equivalent $40 for 16 fl.oz, this seems to be comparable to Jescar Powerlock Plus. Which is quite a bit…
However.
I used very little product doing my bonnet, and this really is a product where you’re not caking the pad or car with it, it’s a thin layer of product.
So although the initial outlay is a little steep, not compared to more expensive products, you are getting a very good product that will last a long time.
I suspect my bottle is going to last me through several details on a number of cars before I need to get more.
I’m still experimenting further, a full detail hopefully happening in the next few months on my car where it will be given a full coat of Wolfgang DGPS.
Benefits of Using a Paint Sealant
So why has a review been done on a sealant, aren’t those old fashioned?
Well, true… Sealants and their close cousins, waxes, are not new to the industry, in fact, they’ve been around since the beginning.
I’m a big fan of sealants, they offer great protection from UV as well as other environmental contaminants, while also being easy to use.
Currently, there’s a big push in the industry for the latest and greatest coatings, whether they be Silicone Dioxide based (SiO2) or graphene-based (GO1 and GO2), these coatings are amazing and work very well.
But my advice to a beginner would always be to start with a good sealant. Coatings, even their friendlier “Light” versions such as CarPro CQuartz Lite or Gyeon CanCoat are still semi-permanent coatings which done incorrectly can take a lot of work to remove, and it isn’t all about if it goes wrong, maybe you’d like to try a new wax or sealant, again, they won’t give you the same effect if there is already a coating on the car.
Now, by no means am I bashing coatings, they are amazing pieces of technology, but we don’t teach people how to drive in a Ferrari… if someone is new to detailing and is passionate, I believe a sealant or wax is a great way to hone skills and experiment with new things, and should you not like something, just remove the sealant and start again.
